I was at a gig the other evening in which the Kennedys & Edwina Hayes were playing. In introducing one of the songs, Maura Kennedy explained how he had a first degree in history, and Masters in folk music. The learning about ‘folk’ had come from inside – mainly through playing with other great musicians (Nanci Griffiths was the haunting presence of the evening). And then he paused, and repeated his words, ‘….the learning came from inside; it was in-tuition’. Struck me with such force – describing learning from inside as having as much enduring impact as tuition; and – conversely – learning from outside could be as unpredictable and surprising as intuition of often thought to be.
What are the implications of this ‘in-tuition’ for governance, for society? and maybe our freedom of association and our freedom to associate help to foster this internal learning – called ‘in-tuition’ in Texas blue grass music.
