In other language from a different discipline something akin to reverie would be called compassionate non-attachment. The notion comes from the work of the early 20th century German philosopher Sigmund Friedlaender, who introduced Fritz Perls, the founder of Gestalt Psychotherapy, to the idea that opposites define each other and that there is a resting point in the middle – the point of creative indifference – which embraces both polarities.… And this was Perls’ summary of what he took from Friedlaender:
“That every event is related to a zero point from which a differentiation into opposites takes place. These opposites show in their specific context a great affinity to each other. By remaining alert in the centre, we can acquire the creative ability of seeing both sides of an occurrence and completing an “incomplete” half.”
I wonder what it might mean to lead from such a place, and what an organisation would be like that had such a leadership system. What might it be like to organise under the spirit of ‘creative indifference’ rather than – say – hierarchy?
